Fellow beekeepers, have you wondered why Monsanto has purchased Beelogics, a honeybee research company? Or why Bee Culture magazine has suddenly drank Monsanto's Kool-ade and are openly singing Monsanto's praises? (See "Future Opportunity in Honey Bee Health" in the current issue of Bee Culture, written by Gregory Heck, whose title at Monsanto is the "Weed Cotrol Platform Lead in the Plant Biology Program."
I believe it's because they know their chemicals are killing our bees and they want to genetically modify bees as they do plants, a sort of "Roundup ready" honeybee if you will. They would have us believe that this genetic engineering is safe and that horizontal gene transfer does not occur. Studies have been done that prove it does occur.
Inform yourselves. This is the next big thing in beekeeping that we beekeepers will have to deal with. Here's an interesting link on research by the Pew Trust.
On a happier note--I will be making nucleus hives today! I've been up since before dawn--so excited I can hardly stand it, but must wait as the day warms. Read about how it goes in my next post.
